  • It follows tonal patterns to ensure good phrasing.

  • It considers the frequency rate of characters set by the user.

-Gou

Rank

Explanation

Sai/Sai(Old Character)

General

"斎" (Sai) refers to a room, as seen in the term "書斎" (shosai), which means study.

It was historically given to professionals such as doctors and artists who primarily worked indoors.

KenAn

This title is given to those who have contributed to the temple or sect, or have made valuable contributions to the public, though not to the extent of receiving an Ingou.

It is commonly awarded to followers of Zen Buddhism (Rinzai-shū and Sōtō-shū).

Originally, it was given to devotees who donated a building on the temple grounds.

Nowadays, it is awarded in cases where a branch family of an Ingou holder or an individual from a family with a "Koji" title advances in status.

TeiBouShaDouEnKai

Originally, this title was related to temples and shrines, but nowadays, please select a title that suits the field in which the individual excelled.

For example, if they ran a shop, titles like ""(Ken) or ""(Tei) would be appropriate.

GakuShitsu

In the Tendai-shū, elderly individuals are sometimes given the title ""(Gaku) or ""(Shitsu).

""(Gaku) is given to men, while ""(Shitsu) is given to women.

JiBou

Basically, it is given to those associated with temples and shrines.

寺殿Jiden

High Rank

Basically, it is given to those associated with temples and shrines, but '寺殿'(Jiden) is of a higher rank.

In

A high-ranking title.

It was originally bestowed upon nobles and members of the imperial family who donated temples.

This is the most common title, and usually, selecting this one will suffice.

院殿Inden

Highest Rank

The title '院殿'(Inden) began to be used in place of ''(In), which was originally reserved for the imperial family.

Over time, while ''(In) came to be used relatively widely for those outside the imperial family, '院殿'(Inden) became restricted to shoguns and daimyo, and thus came to be recognized as the highest-ranking kaimyou.

Today, it is used for politicians such as prime ministers, leaders in various fields, and prominent local families.

However, due to its prestige, it is often avoided for being too high-ranking.

院釋Inshaku

Irregular

Usually not used.

It is for cases where you want to adopt both the 'Inshaku' title from the Jōdo Shin-shū and another title like 'Koji'.

Guidelines for selecting Inga:

*We provide a brief explanation of each Inga.

*There are various options based on factors such as the level of practice or for noble individuals, but ultimately, you can choose according to your preference.

In the table below, words with religious connotations have meanings for both

(1) attaining enlightenment and (2) dying,

so it is acceptable to use them for pre-death Kaimyou.

However, since different words may give different impressions, you can choose from multiple options.

(For reference, we have categorized them as for pre-death oriented and for post-death oriented.)

Additionally, you can freely set the wording by entering words into the text box.

Explanation

寂滅

Jakumetsu

Generally, this wording is used when receiving a Kaimyou.

It represents the ultimate state of peace where the flames of worldly desires have been extinguished and the state of enlightenment.

Although it is commonly associated with death, it does not originally mean death itself.

It can be used for both pre-death and post-death situations, so if you are unsure, it is a safe choice to select this.

入寂

Nyuujaku

Entering Nirvana(=Jakumetsu).

 示寂Jijaku」「遷寂Senjaku」「真寂Shinjaku

入滅

Nyuumetsu

The term '滅(metsu)' refers to the state where the flames of desire have been extinguished, and entering this state means reaching that state of mind.

The concept of complete liberation is completed through the total disappearance of the physical body, meaning death.

Therefore, in religious terms, it can also signify the death of someone who has attained spiritual awakening.

  入定Nyuujou

滅度

Metsudo

Compared to terms like '寂滅(Jaku-metsu)' or '入滅(Nyuu-metsu),' this represents complete enlightenment, transcending life and death to reach the other shore.

Sometimes, it also signifies the death of a Buddha and, by extension, is used for the death of high priests and Buddhist figures.

Therefore, it is generally advisable not to use this term frequently.

遷化

Senge

It signifies the death of monks, particularly high-ranking monks.

However, originally it meant the death of any person, whether monk or layperson, so there is no issue with using it for ordinary people.

  遷去Senkyo

円寂

Enjaku

It refers to the completion of spiritual practice, where all merits are perfected and one has entered Nirvana.

The term '円(En)' means completeness, thus it signifies complete Nirvana and is often used to refer to the death of Buddhas or high-ranking monks.

Be cautious when using this term.

帰元

Kigen

It means transcending the realm of delusion and returning to the original state, interpreted as death in Buddhist terms.

It is commonly used in the Rinzai-shū and Soto-shū Zen-shū, so it is advisable for members of other sects to avoid using it.

  帰寂Kijaku」「帰真Kishin」「帰本Kihon」「帰去Kikyo」「帰化Kika

永眠

Eimin

It refers to death. It is a good choice if you want to avoid strong religious connotations.

Using '瞑目(Meimoku)' can emphasize a greater sense of tranquility.

It is also used in the Christian Orthodox Church.

  永逝Eisei」「長逝Chousei」「瞑目Meimoku

天上

Tenjou

It is not commonly used for Kaimyou.

It is used in cases such as when a Christian passes away.

  昇天Shouten」「召天Shouten」「帰天Kiten

成仏

Joubutsu

Originally, it signifies attaining enlightenment and becoming a Buddha, but nowadays it refers to going to the Pure Land without leaving any attachments to this world.

It is often used without religious connotations.

If one cannot achieve Buddhahood, it is believed that their spirit will continue to wander in this world after death.

死去

Shikyo

It simply indicates death and does not carry any sense of reverence. It is advisable to avoid using it if possible.

  死亡Shibou」「死没Shibotsu」「落命Rakumei」「他界Takai」「絶命Zetsumei」「絶息Zessoku

It is synonymous with '死去(Shikyo),' but is a more polite and respectful general term for referring to a deceased person.

It is even more respectful than '薨去(Koukyo)' and is used exclusively for the Emperor.

往生

Oujou

It refers to the end of life in this world and being reborn in another realm.

This concept is called '輪廻転生(RinneTensei=samsara or reincarnation).

If you do not wish to be reincarnated, it is advisable to choose terms that include '滅(metsu)' or '涅槃(Nehan).'

In this app, individuals aged 88 and older are referred to as having 大往生Daioujou (a peaceful death), but be cautious using 'Daioujou' for individuals whose age might be considered young, as it may be seen as inappropriate.

解脱

Gedatsu

It means liberation from bondage, and in Buddhism, it refers to achieving a state of freedom from delusions and desires, resulting in a liberated mind.

A mind that has attained liberation is free from confusion and desires and is synonymous with Nirvana.

It signifies reaching a state where one is freed from the cycle of reincarnation and does not return to the world of existence.

If reincarnation is desired, it is better to choose '往生(Oujou)'.

鬼籍

Kiseki

'鬼籍(Kiseki)' refers to a ledger in which the names of the deceased are recorded, and the phrase '鬼籍に入る(kisekini-iru)' (to enter the register of the dead) means to die.

This concept comes from Chinese thought, where the soul ascends to heaven to become a deity while the body returns to the earth and becomes a ghost.

Therefore, 'ghost' in this context does not imply going to hell.

涅槃

Nehan

It refers to a high state of enlightenment where one is free from all desires and neither born nor perishes.

It is also used to refer to the death of the Buddha or saints, known as '入滅(Nyuumetsu).'

In Sanskrit, it is called 'Nirvana.'

Generally, it specifically denotes the death of the Buddha and is a term of high rank, so it should be used with caution.

寂静

Jakujou

It describes the state of Nirvana, where one has transcended desires and eliminated suffering, characterized by tranquility and quietude.

It does not imply death. It is used when someone has reached the state of Nirvana while still alive.

It is a euphemistic expression for death that does not carry a Buddhist connotation.

  逝くI-ku」「果つHa-tsu」「瞑すMei-su」「滅すMe-ssu

覚悟

Generally, it means to prepare oneself or to wake from sleep.

However, in Buddhist scriptures, it specifically refers to awakening from delusion, reaching enlightenment, understanding the truth, and attaining true wisdom, as indicated by the kanji.

  悟得Gotoku」「証悟Shougo」「頓悟Tongo」「漸悟Zengo

‘頓悟'Tonsoku)’ is used when one suddenly achieves enlightenment in a genius-like manner, while ‘漸悟(Zenzo)' is used for gradual enlightenment.
